A native, perennial herb of India that is grown as an annual in the USA. It has smaller leaves than those from the Mediterranean area. Cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. Flowers are purple and the leaves have a strog smell. Reported to repel mosquitoes.
