Grows best in part shade to shade, but will do well in sun when the soil is kept moist. When crushed or broken the fronds emit the smell of mown hay, thus its name. Use in shady areas, in woodland gardens and in naturalized areas. Spreads agressively by rhizsomes. When well established, it has drought tolerance.
