Colors vary from white, to green, to yellow, to orange, to red, and maroon. Leaves may have one or many colors. Cannot tolerate freezing temperatures, but is a very popular container plant. Not as well adapted for indoor plantings as many people think because there is usually insufficient light in most interior spaces. Consequently, leaf drop is a serious problem. Aphids, spider mites, and mealy bugs are sometime a problem, especially when growing indoors. Fertilize crotons during the spring, summer and early fall. Large specimens can be overwintered with a minimum protection and care. Keep soil moderately dry during the winter months if storing indoors.
