Has drought tolerance and grows well in areas receiving only about 10 inches of rainfall per year. Yet it does well in the humid southeast where rainfall may exceed 60 inches per year. Has few insect and disease problems. Has two long lasting flowering periods per year. Some people think the flowers resemble those of a bromelaid.
